Why Mindful Eating Matters

Have you ever heard the saying that digestion begins in the brain? Well its true! Lets chat the science behind mindful eating and the link with your nervous system and gut before food even enters your mouth!

The Cephalic Phase of Digestion

The cephalic phase of digestion is the first stage of the digestive process, occurring even before food enters your mouth. It’s all about anticipation—your body preparing for the arrival of food.

This phase is triggered by sensory experiences like the sight, smell, thought, or taste of food. Your brain communicates with your digestive system, getting it ready to break down and absorb nutrients.

What Happens During the Cephalic Phase?

1. Activation of the Nervous System:
The vagus nerve, which connects your brain to your digestive organs, kicks into action. This is part of the parasympathetic nervous system, also known as “rest and digest.”

2. Saliva Production Increases:
Your salivary glands start producing enzymes like amylase, which begins breaking down carbohydrates in the mouth.

3. Stomach Prepares for Digestion:
The stomach starts producing gastric juices, including hydrochloric acid (HCl) and enzymes like pepsin, to prepare for protein digestion. The stomach muscles begin to contract slightly, readying themselves for food.

4. Pancreatic Enzymes and Bile Secretion Begin:
Your brain signals the pancreas and liver to prepare digestive enzymes and bile, crucial for breaking down fats and proteins.

Why the Cephalic Phase Matters?

- Optimises Digestion: Preparing the digestive system before food arrives ensures that nutrients are broken down efficiently.

- Prevents Digestive Discomfort: Skipping this phase (e.g., eating while distracted or stressed) can lead to incomplete digestion, bloating, or indigestion.

- Enhances Nutrient Absorption: Proper activation of the digestive system allows for better absorption of vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients.

How to Support the Cephalic Phase
- Be Present with Your Meals: Take a moment to appreciate your food before eating. Look at it, smell it, and think about the flavours.

- Avoid Eating on the Go: Rushing through meals can bypass the cephalic phase, leaving your digestive system unprepared.

- Incorporate Rituals Around Meals: Setting the table, or simply taking deep breaths before eating can activate this phase.

- Chew Your Food Thoroughly: This stimulates saliva production and signals your stomach that food is on the way. You want your food to be a paste before swallowing

By honoring the cephalic phase, you not only enhance your digestion but also create a more enjoyable and nourishing eating experience.
